Colorectal Cancer

Carbon ion radiotherapy for colorectal cancer

Indications

Carbon ion radiotherapy is performed in the following cases.

DiseaseIndication
1Postoperative pelvic recurrence of colorectal cancerRecurrence in the pelvis after colorectal cancer surgery
2Postoperative abdominal lymph node recurrence of colorectal cancerRecurrence in an abdominal lymph node after colorectal cancer surgery

Carbon ion radiotherapy is not performed for primary colorectal cancer itself. Please contact us through your primary physician.
Carbon ion radiotherapy is indicated in cases of recurrence in the pelvis or abdominal lymph node after initial surgery for the primary colorectal cancer. The eligibility criteria for the treatment are absence of other distant metastases, intra-pelvic infections and enough margin between the recurrence and the bladder and gastrointestinal tract (stomach, duodenum, small and large intestines). It is therefore recommended that referrals should be made after consulting with your primary physician. Carbon ion radiotherapy may also be possible in patients who previously underwent radiation therapy on pelvis (including radiation therapy before or after initial surgery for primary colorectal cancer).

Treatment record in QST hospital

DiseasePeriodNumber of Patients
1Postoperative pelvic recurrence of colorectal cancer1994 to 2018577
2Postoperative abdominal lymph node recurrence of colorectal cancer1998 to 201898

The outcomes of treatment for pelvic recurrence after rectal surgery were a 5-year local control rate (percentage of patients without recurrence of a tumor subjected to carbon ion radiotherapy after 5 years) of 88% and a 5-year survival rate of 59%.*1 The results were favorable as compared with those reported with treatments such as X-ray radiation therapy and comparable to the results of surgery.
