Carbon ion radiotherapy is not performed for brain tumors currently.
Skull base tumors are rare, and complete surgical resection is difficult because they develop from locations deep within the head and are adjacent to structures such as the brain, nerves, and blood vessels. In addition, the disease is resistant to conventional radiation therapy and drug therapy. Therefore, hope lies with carbon ion radiotherapy. Carbon ion radiotherapy is indicated when complete surgical resection is difficult or the patient does not desire surgery and also when the disease has not spread to other organs and the lesions are limited to the base of the skull.
Although carbon ion radiotherapy has previously been performed for brain tumors in clinical studies, it is currently not being used for such tumors either in clinical research or in advanced medical care.
